Carol Seltzer
* - December 25, 2017Carol Seltzer resided in Forty Fort for more than 60 years and did a great deal of volunteer work, including planting and caring for trees to beautify the town. With the help of friends, volunteers, and fellow members of the Shade Tree Commission, she planted more than 200 trees throughout Forty Fort. Many of the trees were paid for by Seltzer out of her own pocket.
“She really was something else,” said Mayor Andy Tuzinski, who worked with Seltzer for over 32 years. “She loved trees and she loved Forty Fort.”
Forty Fort was named a Tree City USA for over 30 consecutive years by the National Arbor Day Foundation, mostly because of Seltzer’s “tireless efforts on behalf of the Shade Tree Commission,” according to a news release from the borough.
Besides planting trees, Seltzer also volunteered as a Girl Scout leader and as a member of the Forty Fort Community Ambulance. “She enriched the lives of many people through her volunteer efforts,” Tuzinski added.
In her younger days, Seltzer served with the U.S. Navy.
The borough plans to add some additional trees in honor of Seltzer’s legacy in the spring of 2018 in the area of Welles Street and Rutter Avenue, a place where she was always watering and working on trees. The project will be named the Carol Seltzer Beautification Area.
